The Colonels began as a major league team, playing in the National League in the 1800's. In 1900 the league decided to contract from 12 to 8 teams. The Colonels owner, who also owned the Pirates, moved 14 players to Pittsburgh ending the Colonels' time at the major league level. While the team never competed at the major league level again, it continued on at the minor league level for another 70 years.
