Collection: World Football League

The World Football League (WFL) was established in 1973 by Gary Davidson and Don Regan, the same folks who founded the World Hockey Association (WHA) and the American Basketball Association (ABA). The WHA and ABA were rebel leagues created to challenge the existing pro leagues of the day in their respective sports. Those leagues had met with moderate success by the time the WFL was formed to challenge the established football league. However, the WFL wasn’t as fortunate as most of its team owners were severely undercapitalized. The league struggled through its first season before collapsing halfway through its second.
